Near the Maranhão Dam in the municipality of Avis, Monte de Bordalos lies within a serene estate surrounded by forested land, predominantly traditional cork oak woodland grazed by sheep, along with irrigated fields of maize, annual crops, and vineyards.
With over 300 years of history, the estate was fully renovated in 2023 and now offers high-quality accommodation, including 6 spacious suites, each with a private entrance and en-suite bathroom, as well as one one-bedroom apartment (T1) and two two-bedroom apartments (T2). Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, a large and comfortable living room with breathtaking views of the Maranhão Dam and the town of Avis, a dining area, and a games room featuring table tennis and table football. While there is no on-site restaurant or café, high-quality frozen meals are available for purchase.
Guests can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool and easy, direct access to the dam, perfect for water-based activities. Bicycles and kayaks are available for exploring the estate and surrounding nature. Fishing is also possible directly from the property.
The region is rich in historical heritage, boasting prehistoric, Roman, and medieval monuments. Highlights include the town of Avis—once the headquarters of the military monastic Order of St. Benedict of Avis, founded in the 12th century by Portugal’s first king—and the renowned Alter do Chão National Stud Farm, located about 30 km away.
Access to the estate is via an 8 km dirt road, enhancing the sense of seclusion, privacy, and adventure.
Guests can enjoy private boat tours departing directly from our exclusive access to the Maranhão Dam. Wine and olive oil tastings at the renowned Herdade Rovisco Garcia can also be arranged. For watersports enthusiasts, ski and wakeboard lessons with the acclaimed former French athlete Pierre Chappuis are available, also departing from our private dam access.
